Pandora - The World of Avatar

On May 27, Disney's Animal Kingdom opened the largest expansion in the park's history-- Pandora - The World of Avatar. This 12 acre expansion, inspired by James Cameron's 2009 film "AVATAR", was created in partnership with Cameron and his company, Lightstorm Entertainment. Pandora features two new attractions, Na'vi River Journey and Flight of Passage, a new quick service restaurant, Satu'li Canteen, and a new merchandise location, Windtraders.

Majority of my internship with Disney consisted of promotional work for Pandora. I worked with Good Morning America, Nightline, Headline News, The Verge and several other outlets to coordinate coverage of Pandora. During our grand opening Press Event May 23 - 25, I managed interviews with Jon Landau, producer of "AVATAR" and "Titanic," and a key Lightstorm collaborator on Pandora. I also tracked coverage, created media and spokesperson bios, helped prepare for smaller press events leading up to the larger, and more.

ABC Takeover

From March 6 to 9, Good Morning America, Nightline and several other ABC news and entertainment shows aired coverage about Pandora - The World of Avatar. The View was the most dominant of these, broadcasting for an entire week from Disney's Animal Kingdom. This was the first real peek into the land, which was still partially under construction at the time. For both shows, I was tasked with researching Pandora and the film, "AVATAR," curating photos and film, and more for various segments. On site, I assisted in the management of taped and live segment production.

Good Morning America had segments on two different days. Their first hit was a live broadcast with Whoopi Goldberg from The View's temporary stage in front of the Tree of Life at Disney's Animal Kingdom. The short segment aired to an audience of more than 4 million viewers.

Their second hit was a live broadcast with anchor Paula Faris from Pandora on March 9. The segment featured content filmed throughout the week, including interviews with Imagineer Joe Rohde and Jon Landau, producer of Avatar. The segment aired to an audience of more than 4 million viewers.

Nightline aired their segment on March 9 and featured Faris as well. Their piece featured interviews with James Cameron, Landau and Rohde, a look inside the attractions and food on Pandora, and more. Their segment aired to an audience of almost 2 million viewers.

Headline News

Headline News (HLN), a CNN news show, came down for the grand opening press event for Pandora - The World of Avatar, May 23 - 25. They filmed interviews, attraction footage and more, culminating in a final segment, both live and pre-taped, that aired on Friday, May 26.

I assisted with live segment production for the show, including producing a face paint live hit . I recruited and managed talent, coordinated with the artists and styled costumes and face paint.

Good Morning America

Good Morning America came back to Pandora for the grand opening press event, May 23 - 25. They taped interviews, ride footage and more, with content airing on May 25, with live and pre-taped segments.

I assisted in the production of live segments for the show, including managing child talent and a background audience, styling costumes and selecting face paint and props for the live hit.

The Verge

The Verge, a segment of Vox Media, attended the grand opening press event for Pandora - The World of Avatar. I escorted them around throughout the entire event, making sure they were able to get all interviews and film all content needed for their pieces. Acting as an unofficial Pandora tour guide, I drove home all message points about the excitement and otherworldliness of Pandora was conveyed. This resulted in several positive articles about the land, and two very excited journalists.

The human brain isn’t accustomed to seeing mountains floating in the sky, so it’s hard to process exactly what you’re seeing the first time you step into Pandora: The World of Avatar.
